About Us

The Tri-County Hospice Society was formed in 2004 by a dedicated group of community volunteers to ensure that residents of the area receive dignified and person centred end-of-life care.

Donate

There are many ways to support the Tri-County Hospice Society. Annual fund raisers are supported by volunteers, entertainers, donations from individuals/businesses, use of facilities, and interviews/promotions on local radio. The generous donors and their contribution of time and resources is extensive and greatly appreciated.

Accomplishment

In collaboration with the Nova Scotia Health, the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, and the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, the Society funded the construction and furnishing of 7 hospice beds within 4 North at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Fundraising enabled the seven rooms to be designed and furnished, optimizing patients and family members comfort. Following are recent annual reports and a report on the status of palliative care in the Tri-Counties.

What is Hospice Care vs Palliative Care?

Palliative Care starts when a patient is diagnosed with a terminal illness. It aims to improve patient quality of life during treatment for the underlying condition by addressing issues such as fatigue, weakness, anxiety or depression.

Hospice Care starts when curative treatment has stopped, or has not been started by choice, and provides medical care to relieve symptoms, as well as other types of support such as counselling, help with medical equipment, and grief support.

Hospice Care therefore refers to end-of-life care. It commences in-hospital or at-home when there is no hope of patient recovery, and end of life is imminent.

What is the Mission of the Hospice Society?

When was the Hospice Society established, and what was its’ goal?

The Hospice Society was formed on 18 May, 2004. Its’ goal was to have designated Hospice Care beds to support the unique needs of the terminally ill. Options considered in the following years included a Hospice Care unit located within the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, a Hospice Care unit located within an existing Nursing Home, or a free-standing Hospice Care unit.

How does the Hospice Society raise funds?

The Society has received gift donations and financial support from individuals, businesses, the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, local municipalities and local service groups. In 2023, the Society received general donations of $18,100, including a donation of $12,600 from “100 guys who share”. Grants totalling $8,570 were received from local Municipalities, and $46,500 was raised at a fundraiser held in September.

How much has the society funded to date?

The Society, since 2018, has funded $174,000 towards the needs of 4N and the VON for palliative and hospice care. In 2023 the Society funded needs worth approximately $47,800, including $7,800 in direct funding, and $40,000 funded through the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation.

How do I become a Palliative/Hospice Care volunteer?

Training for Palliative/Hospice Care volunteers is provided by Nova Scotia Health and by the VON. Both programs were suspended due to COVID but were resumed in 2023.

NS Health: The Volunteer Services team with Nova Scotia Health supports Palliative Care volunteers in various settings. At Yarmouth Regional, there are volunteers with specialized palliative care training who provide support to the in-patient unit.
